Car Window Repair- Do It Yourself Or Not?

There is a good chance that if you drive long enough you are going to be faced with a broken window. Sometimes they are busted out by thrown object and sometimes they develop cracks that progress into major problems. Either way you may be forced to do a car window repair so you should know what to expect.

Before you tackle anything technical its always a good idea to look it over and decide whether you’re the right person for the job. Are you going to get in over your head? Are you mechanically inclined enough to put it back together once its in pieces on the ground? You should carefully consider these things before you tackle this because once you start there’s no turning back.

The first thing to do is make sure you have plenty of room and a flat floor to work over. There will undoubtedly be glass fragments that drop and you want to be able to clean them all up.   Some people don’t like working over concrete because it is too hard, but if you drop glass it will break regardless of where you are. Concrete is a lot easier to sweep up than on dirt.

You have to remove the rest of the glass out first. You need to wear thick gloves for this. Leather is best, but any thick ones will do. Be careful and take your time. Once the glass is out remove the door handle, panel and armrest. Next, you will also need to remove the vapor barrier. Be very careful with this- it will rip easily.

You should be able to see the glass now so remove any other pieces that you see. Take the new glass and set it inside the track. It should attach with a pin around the bottom. Test to make sure it lowers and raises. If it is okay, replace the vapor barrier, panel, armrest, and handle.
Make sure to thoroughly clean any glass that dropped out. If your window works and everything is cleaned up then you have successfully finished a car window repair. And in the process you have saved yourself a lot of money.
